Ab Wheel Rollout

An anti-extension exercise where you roll out and resist your lower back sagging — very challenging for the entire abdominal wall.

Step by step

  1. 1. Start position

    Kneel on a pad holding an ab wheel under your shoulders.

  2. 2. Mid-rep

    Go only as far as you can without your lower back sagging.

  3. 3. End of the movement

    Pull the wheel back toward your knees using your abs and lats.

  4. 4. Common mistake

    Lower back arching at full extension

How to do it

Setup

  1. 1Kneel on a pad holding an ab wheel under your shoulders.
  2. 2Tuck your pelvis slightly and brace your abs.
  3. 3Keep your arms straight and your back slightly rounded, not arched.

Execution

  1. 1Roll the wheel forward slowly, extending your hips and arms together.
  2. 2Go only as far as you can without your lower back sagging.
  3. 3Pull the wheel back toward your knees using your abs and lats.
  4. 4Keep the pelvis tucked throughout.

Breathing

Inhale and brace on the way out, exhale as you roll back.

Key form cues

  • Ribs down
  • Tuck the tail
  • Arms straight

Common mistakes

  • Lower back arching at full extension

    Shorten the range or roll toward a wall to limit distance.

  • Sitting the hips back first on the return

    Pull with the abs so hips and shoulders return together.

  • Bending the arms

    Keep the elbows straight and the motion at the shoulders and hips.

From the wheel under the shoulders to the furthest point you can hold without the lower back sagging.
