Standing Calf Raise

A straight-knee heel raise that trains the calves — especially the gastrocnemius — through a full stretch and squeeze.

Muscle activation

  • Calves100%

Approximate share of work; varies with grip, stance and tempo.

Step by step

  1. 1. Start position

Stand on the edge of a step or calf-raise platform with the balls of your feet on the edge.

  2. 2. Mid-rep

Pause briefly in the stretch to remove any bounce.

  3. 3. End of the movement

Rise onto the balls of your feet as high as possible, pushing through the big toe.

  4. 4. Common mistake

    Bouncing quickly through short reps

Key form cues

  • Stretch deep at the bottom
  • Push through the big toe
  • Tall on your tiptoes
  • No bouncing

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing quickly through short reps

Slow down, pause at the bottom and use the full range on every rep.

  • Bending the knees to help push

Keep the knees straight so the calves do the work; lower the weight if needed.

  • Rolling onto the outside of the foot

Keep pressure through the big-toe side so the ankle moves straight up and down.

Range of motion

From heels below the step in a full calf stretch to as high as possible on the balls of the feet.
