Step by step

  1. 1. Start position

    Adjust the seat so the handles line up with your mid-chest.

  2. 2. Mid-rep

    Keep your shoulder blades against the pad — don't let the shoulders roll forward.

  3. 3. End of the movement

    Return under control until you feel a stretch across the chest.

  4. 4. Common mistake

    Seat too low or high so the handles sit at the shoulders or belly

How to do it

Setup

  1. 1Adjust the seat so the handles line up with your mid-chest.
  2. 2Sit with your back flat against the pad and feet planted.
  3. 3Grip the handles, retract your shoulder blades and keep your chest up.

Execution

  1. 1Press the handles forward until your arms are nearly straight.
  2. 2Keep your shoulder blades against the pad — don't let the shoulders roll forward.
  3. 3Return under control until you feel a stretch across the chest.
  4. 4Pause briefly, then press again without letting the stack touch down.

Breathing

Exhale as you press, inhale as the handles return.

Key form cues

  • Chest up
  • Shoulders stay back
  • Squeeze the handles together
  • Slow on the way back

Common mistakes

  • Seat too low or high so the handles sit at the shoulders or belly

    Set the handles in line with mid-chest before your first set.

  • Shoulders rolling forward at lockout

    Stop just short of full reach and keep the upper back pinned to the pad.

  • Letting the stack crash between reps

    Control the return and keep light tension at the stretch.
